1. Tell us about your latest book. LIFTING THE WHEEL OF KARMA is a profound spiritual journey of extraordinary healing and redemption set within a modern tale that harkens back to the myths of antiquity.
2. How did you come up with the title for your book(s)?For me, coming up with the right title was nearly harder than writing the book! If I told you some of the past titles I was considering, you probably wouldn’t believe me. Ultimately, I believe the title should express what the novel is about. In my case, that involved a long sleepless night high up in the Himalayas of India, writing and rewriting many different versions until finally, LIFTING THE WHEEL OF KARMA, just made sense.
3. How much of your work is real? How much is fantasy? The vast majority of my novel is real in the traditional sense. While there is most certainly an element of supernatural, I believe how much of that is supernatural would depend on whom you ask.
4. What advice would you give to writers just starting out?Never give up and never permit yourself to give less than everything you’ve got.
5. Do you ever suffer from writer's block? If so, what do you do about it? I think it would be safe to say that I have had more than my fair share of writer’s block –it took me 25 years to write my novel. I don’t obsess about writer’s block because I think it only makes it worse. I try to let the work flow organically and put myself in a working meditative place that allows the work to flow.
6. Who is your favorite author and why? My favorite author is Theodore Dreiser, who in 1925 wrote “An American Tragedy”. I love this book not only because it nearly single handedly taught me every word I needed to know for the SATs, but he so vividly captured the tortured restraint of the protagonist who, tragically, was not ultimately able to restrain his torment.
7. How did you deal with rejection letters?I think dealing with and processing rejection letters is probably a lot like dealing with the 5 Stages of grief. Ultimately, however, I simply realized that agents just didn’t get the work and that it was up to me to share it with the world. Fortunately for me, the world has been universally kind, receptive, and supportive.
8. What tools do you feel are must-haves for writers?Passion, a refusal to give up, and an ability to connect with readers.
9. Do you ever research real events, legends, or myths to get ideas? The universal archetype of mythologies has been a major influence on the fabric of my story.
10. What's the weirdest thing you've ever done in the name of research?Attempting snake charming up close and personal.
